Les ombelles

Umbelliferae, (or Apiaceae)  a family of plants that includes more than 3,000 species ( carrots, parsnips, celery, fennel, but also parsley, chervil, coriander, sweet myrrh, dill or cumin are among them). They owe their name to their umbellate flowers: the flower stalks all start from the same point on the stem. Our favourite? Angelica, of course!

A major symbol of Niort, along with the dragon, it has been used since ancient times for its many virtues: as a tonic for its roots, as a sedative in essential oil, or as a digestive. It is used to make sweets, liqueurs and a whole arsenal of other things. Compound leaves, umbels and achenes… welcome to the Umbelliferae family! But beware: some members of this beautiful family are toxic and difficult to distinguish, so there’s a risk of confusion that could be fatal…

Dangerous members of the family? Giant hogweed or hemlock, for example, one of the best-known ombelliferae.  In ancient times, this toxic plant was the poison most commonly used by the Athenians to execute their condemned prisoners. This is how Socrates was executed. To distinguish angelica from hemlock, simply crush a few leaves: angelica is fragrant and can be used as such, but hemlock stinks!
