La Venise Verte
Your room takes its name from the Marais mouillée, the flooded part of the Marais Poitevin in the immediate vicinity of Niort. A veritable aquatic labyrinth, the ” Venise verte “, like its Italian cousin can be visited along the water or on foot along the hiking trails.
In May 2010, the site was awarded the “Grand site de France” label. Covering around 29,000 hectares and boasting 2,100 km of waterways (canals, conches, ditches, gullies, etc.), the wet marshes have become a popular tourist destination.
Located between Maillé and Niort, the Venise Verte is without doubt the most astonishing environment in the Marais Poitevin. A land of waterways and green silence, these wet marshes offer an original and unique landscape.
The countless ditches and canals, lined with pollard ashes, sometimes lined with a row of peupliers, form a tightly-meshed bocage of water. In this veritable aquatic labyrinth, market gardeners use their boats to fish for eels, lead their cattle to pasture, and transport hay, wood and mogettes (white beans). Even today, these light, flat-bottomed boats are slowly pulled along by pigouille or shovel. They remain the only way to discover this exceptional natural environment…

Our host were so welcoming and friendly. Fantastic location, near the station.
Also perfect for work, with a lounge for small business meetings.
