Les ombelles
Umbelliferae, (or Apiaceae) a family of plants that includes more than 3,000 species ( carrots, parsnips, celery, fennel, but also parsley, chervil, coriander, sweet myrrh, dill or cumin are among them). They owe their name to their umbellate flowers: the flower stalks all start from the same point on the stem. Our favourite? Angelica, of course!
Dangerous members of the family? Giant hogweed or hemlock, for example, one of the best-known ombelliferae. In ancient times, this toxic plant was the poison most commonly used by the Athenians to execute their condemned prisoners. This is how Socrates was executed. To distinguish angelica from hemlock, simply crush a few leaves: angelica is fragrant and can be used as such, but hemlock stinks!
